The 12 Nonfiction Books That Have Changed How I Live In the World

12 nonfiction books image

As I was purchasing the Kindle version of Big Magic today (note: everything Elizabeth Gilbert writes/says/does should be on an artist’s priority list of conscious consumption), I realized I hadn’t written about my own list of books that have changed my life.

So with no further adieu, here they are!

These books have completely helped me upgrade my communication, relationships, business and health in the last few years, and I’m super grateful for them.

IMG_9060This is part of the Live All of You Interview Series! For more on what this is all about, head over to the intro post and make sure to sign up to find out who I’ll be interviewing next.

For my very first interview in the Live All of You Series, I am so happy to introduce you to my fellow Coloradan, Tonya Leigh. An admitted hedonist, Francophile, romantic and insatiable curator of experiences, Tonya is an absolute joy to behold.

She’s a certified Master Coach, an internationally-trained sommelier, and a joie de vivre instigator for women of every age. And she fuses all her passions into her business, French Kiss Life (which is part of her credo: “French Kiss Life. Cherish The World. And The Rest Will Follow”).

Tonya truly lives what she teaches, and I’m proud to introduce her to Live All of You readers as one of the women who inspires me to live fully.

Unveiling The “Live All of You” Interview Series

Live All of You series graphic

For the last two years and change, I’ve been doing personal interviews with vibrant, successful entrepreneurs, creatives and independents who are living all of themselves in the world.

Aligned with their truth, these people are weaving magic in the universe, helping others and coming alive—every single day.

My specifications? I sought out people who are truly showing up and expressing their full, authentic selves—no matter how messy or shadowy—in the world.

Inspired by “The Way I Work and “How I Work” columns in Inc. and Lifehacker, the Live All of You Interview Series will focus on play/purpose integration and insight into what it means to live fully and attract what we deeply desire in life, work and love.

I believe that feeling fully expressed in our body, spirit and soul is the secret to living our greatest life. And these entrepreneurs, writers, teachers, coaches, explorers, and leaders prove it—every day.

Your Ticket to a Freedom-Filled Life: Start a Website in 7 Mins

freedom filled life how to start a website

I want to share with you one of the biggest ways I add more independence, creative freedom, empowerment and fulfillment to my life.

This has honestly been the “ticket” to the life I was wanting but not fully living, and has been paying dividends for a couple of years now.

Today, I want to show exactly (complete with screenshots!) how to get it—by starting a website that honors your authenticity in 7 minutes.

Your #1 ticket is your website.

If you put the energy, heart and soul into a website that reflects who you are and what you can offer in the world, the life you want is within reach.

This is not about having a 4-hour workweek; though some weeks might end up like that, you’ll definitely be putting in the hours to make this work.

Even as someone who runs a Manifest Like a Mofo course, I’m here to tell you—manifesting and “doing the work” aren’t really that dissimilar.

The thing is, you need both: intention and action. You need the woo-woo and the work—you can’t have one or the other and expect the full-blown, inspiring results you have your heart set on. If it makes you more comfortable, you can call woo-woo “commitment,” or what have you.

Whatever way you sling it, your intention channeled through action will show the universe exactly what you want.

If you are willing to be vulnerable, to be of service to others, and to stay passionate (and figure out what can bring you back to that place when you forget)—you’ll receive it.

You might think building a website is a huge endeavor. I’m not going to lie to you—it can be. But the sooner you get over your feelings of overwhelm and get something out there, the faster you’ll start to see results and start living the life you really want.

Whether you want to start building out your first-and-last-name domain name, or you’re ready to start an online niche site from a burst of lightning idea that keeps wanting to be birthed—here’s how you can get your business off the ground and in the air in 7 minutes or less.

To make it fun, we’ll set a timer and countdown from 7:00 minutes. Aaaaand go!

Keep Coworking Relevant + 8 Must-Visit Kansas City Restaurants & Cafes

I’ve thought about starting a coworking space many times, because it is the brick and mortar equivalent of what I believe can change the world—a community of people with strongly aligned value systems around creation, receptivity and sharing.

But in 2014, I believe we’re quickly approaching the time when, “I opened a coworking space!” will no longer be newsworthy in the eyes of journalists. In a lot of cities, we’re already there.

As coworking spaces become more ubiquitous, grand openings are only worth a mention if there is a greater purpose behind it.

Beyond the infrastructure, why does coworking matter in 2014? How can we make it matter?

I’m facilitating a panel at this year’s Global Coworking Conference to talk about newer, more compelling narratives that coworking space owners can develop—not only to stay relevant to the media, but also to be more attractive and valuable to prospective members.

You’re Committed to What You’re Getting: Making New Agreements

I’m deep into leading my Manifest Like a Mofo group, and today we’re hitting on one of the hardest themes: taking responsibility for how you create your life.

When I read this in Conscious Loving (one of my bibles for life) by Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks, it floored me:

It’s simple to find out what you’re committed to—just look at the results you’re creating.

Gay elaborates on this in Conscious Living: He says that every time we’re faced with a choice, we can either take healthy responsibility or blame someone or something else. Each time we avoid responsibility, we claim victimhood.

Being a victim means we have no choice, we’re not in control, and we aren’t choosing our moments.

The idea that we choose our reality is an intense concept to step into if you haven’t been here before (and even if you have). It can bring up a lot of denial, fear, self-righteousness and anger.

One Thing You Can Do Every Morning to Shift Your Vibration | Avocado Mornings #5

First thing in the morning (ok, after you have hot lemon water), you should do this: change your story.

I am someone who gets up at 7 a.m.
I am someone who wears scarves.
I am someone who rides my bike in Winter—and rocks it.

Change your story slightly. Mildly. Why so small? Because subtly shifting your energy changes your vibration, and lets the universe know you’re ready to allow new things to come into your life—big and small.
